The function of the sacrificial anode is to ensure that corrosion occurs on the anode instead of on your stove. That’s why it’s important to clean it if there are signs of corrosion.
To check if the anode has been affected, unscrew it — no tools should be needed, only hand force. The rod on the anode will have a coating; if it does, scrape it off using a knife or sandpaper. The surface should be clean metal.
If the coating is heavy or recurring, the anode will eventually need to be replaced.
The smaller the anode becomes, the less effective it is. The anode must be at least 10 mm in diameter and 90 mm in length.
